HandsOn’s emergency food clearinghouse is the primary access point to Central Ohio’s network of nearly 100 food pantries, soup kitchens, and meal sites. More than 1 million Central Ohioans have relied on us to find emergency food since we first launched our Foodline in the 1980s. Today, we continue this essential service as a partner in a community-wide effort to strengthen food security by developing a comprehensive food access system. Foodline is an essential strategy in this system, helping deliver more than 1 million meals to Central Ohioans each year. In 2015 we partnered with the City of Columbus and AT&T to make emergency food access even easier in Columbus’ most food insecure neighborhoods, using the text and chat features on mobile phones. More than 100,000 people in the Linden, Franklinton, Hilltop, and Southside neighborhoods can simply text “food” to a designated number for convenient, on-the-go access to emergency food, closest to home. Our work in food security has been recognized by the Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations for its innovation and social impact.
