The number of Central Ohioans affected by poverty is increasing. HandsOn partners with the United Way of Central Ohio, Salvation Army, and Franklin County Tax Time Coalition to administer coordinated access to leveraged financial resources for individuals and families at risk of, or facing an immediate economic crisis.
The Emergency Food & Shelter Program provides timely resources to supplement work by our social service partners to provide food, shelter, and supportive services to people facing economic emergencies. A local board and network of service providers distribute food; disburse rent, mortgage, and utilities assistance payments; supply transportation and other related items for residents of Franklin and Fairfield Counties.
Wages continue to lag behind the cost of housing, healthcare, and other basic needs. The Earned Income Tax Credit helps bridge the gap between what hard-working people earn, and what they need to stabilize their families. For 10 years, Tax Time has invested in providing qualifying families with free tax preparation assistance at nearly 100 sites across Franklin County. Last year, over 19,000 clients saved $4 million in tax preparation fees and received almost $20 million in Earned Income Tax Credit refunds.
